Brief description: Programme of 2 days and a half day with a sharing event.
Storytelling

1 day or

½ day option

The storyteller will be telling oral stories from across the British Isles –  folktales from Katharine Briggs’ definitive 4 volume Dictionary of British Folk Tales and Joseph Jacobs’ collections of English and Celtic fairy tales; from the Mabinogion in Wales and Scottish tinker tales. Ira often draws from e-books on Gutenberg.org from the 19th century, when ‘folktales of the centuries’ were first widely put into print, which can then be followed up after his visit, as a free download. Ira demonstrates how one remembers the core plot of a tale, and then improvises it afresh each telling (Ira often asks the class to tailor the tale to their own school day, name the characters and change their circumstances and appearance.

Folk Song

1 day or

½ a day option

The singing leader will take the pupils on a journey through Britain exploring the traditional folk songs of Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England. These fun and lively workshops will engage everyone with vocal warm ups, games and stories to link into the songs. The pupils will have the opportunity to compose their own lyrics, incorporate percussion instruments and movement. From traditional working songs to sea shanties, these simple songs are quick to learn and give a real insight into the work, landscape, celebrations and hardships faced by people over the years.

Folk Dance

1 day or

½ day

Sessions include a themed warm up, learning of taught choreography, the opportunity for self expression and children’s own choreography.  Embedded focus on counting (numeracy) and on contextual information (literacy) in Q & A throughout.

Potential for a guided research pack for teachers to do in class just before the workshops.  Points such as time periods, location, costumes, music and political reasons could be listed and sources of information provided by the presenter (who currently guides dance students in their early stages of academic research so can do this for primary level).

Photography

1 day or

½ day possible

Operating within the North East, the practitioner is very  experienced in delivering photography workshops ranging from formal lecturing at degree level right through to facilitating workshops in Primary schools, with Arts Award, evening classes and community group sessions. He recently completed a schools’ partnership project with MiMA and Middlesbrough schools.

Using archive photographs of British School Life in years gone by as an initial stimulus, learners will be introduced to photography as a medium and embark upon exploring the theme and concept of documentary photography. This will lead to learners developing new skills in photographic  composition, theory and techniques and putting them into practical use by creating new images of their contemporary school life and environment, in turn creating a new ‘documentary archive’ for the future.

Sharing event 23rd June 20 minute activity ranging from song, visual art, storytelling, dance and craft with 5 schools, then a get together at the end.  2 hour session.
